Welcome to today’s daily word problem by Polymath. We have created an “easy” and “hard” problem, please feel free to adapt them to suit your needs!
Easier level:
On a sunny day, Mia and Liam decide to visit their grandparents. Mia thinks they can get there by taking 3 different routes: the first route is 10 kilometres, the second is twice as long as the first, and the third is 5 kilometres less than the second. How many kilometres would they travel if they take all three routes to get there?
Answer:
First route is 10 kilometres.
Second route is twice the first, making it 20 kilometres.
Third route is 5 kilometres less than the second, making it 15 kilometres.
Adding all routes together, Mia and Liam would travel 45 kilometres in total.

Harder level:
Lucy and her brother Tom are visiting their grandparents for the weekend. Their grandparents have prepared 36 cookies to share equally among them. If they decide to save 6 cookies for their parents, how many cookies will each child get? Remember, Lucy and Tom want to share the remaining cookies equally.
Answer:
Subtract the cookies saved for parents from the total: 36 - 6 = 30 cookies.
Divide the remaining cookies equally between Lucy and Tom: 30 ÷ 2 = 15 cookies.
Each child gets 15 cookies.
