Welcome to today’s daily word problem by Polymath. We have created an “easy” and “hard” problem, please feel free to adapt them to suit your needs!
Easier level:
At the Ocean Sounds Music Festival, there were 58 people in the morning. In the afternoon, 27 more people arrived, but then 15 people decided to go home early. How many people were at the festival after these changes?
Answer:
Initial count in the morning: 58 people
Total number of people after 27 new arrivals in the afternoon:
58 + 27 = 85 people
Total number of people after 15 leave early:
85 - 15 = 70 people

Harder level:
Liam is planning his day at the Soundwave Spectacular and has a tight schedule to follow. He wants to see three acts: the Pop Pandas, the Electro Elephants, and the Funky Flamingos, with each act lasting 45 minutes. The Pop Pandas start at 2:00 PM, followed by the Electro Elephants an hour after the Pop Pandas finish, and the Funky Flamingos start 30 minutes after the Electro Elephants finish. Given this schedule, what is Liam doing at 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM, and 5:00 PM?
Answer:
The Pop Pandas start at 2pm and finish at 2:45pm
The Electro Elephants start at 3:45pm and finish at 4:30pm
The Funky Flamingos start at 5pm.
At 2pm Liam is watching Pop Pandas, at 3:30pm there is no act playing, at 5pm Liam is watching Funky Flamingos!
